Retro Gaming- Mortal Kombat 9: (2011)

Mortal Kombat 9 PS3 -3

The early 10’s was such a fun time period in the gaming world due to the release of many cool titles like Mortal Kombat 9.   Shortly after NetherRealm Studios  developed Mortal Kombat 9 for multiple game consoles it quickly became one of the most popular games of 2011.  In terms of gameplay and cinematic cutscenes Mortal Kombat 9 was a game that many fans of the MK series have been dying to see for many years.  The story mainly revolved around Raiden trying to change the past during his battle with the main antagonist of the game Shao Khan.   The story mode allows people to play through the events of Mortal Kombat I, II and III as the main characters in the series.

The story mode in Mortal Kombat 9 allows people to play as many different characters including Liu Kang, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Sonya, Kung Lao, Kitana, Jade and others.  Along with having a pretty cool story mode Mortal Kombat 9 as some fun offline game modes including tag team battles that people can play in arcade or versus mode.  The tag mode in Mortal Kombat 9 was unique because it also allowed co-op gameplay where two players can be apart of the same team.   When Mortal Kombat 9 was first released the blend of 2D gameplay with awesome 3D character and stage design using the Unreal Engine 3 was very impressive.  While the 3D gameplay Mortal Kombat games such as: Deadly Alliance and Armageddon were enjoyable during the 00’s it was nice to see the MK series return to the 2D style gameplay from the past.

In terms of cinematic cutscenes and gameplay quality some might argue that Mortal Kombat 9 was even better than titles like Super Street Fighter IV which was released back in the Spring of 2010.  The Unreal Engine 3 does a great job in making the fighting and fatalities look more brutal than any other Mortal Kombat game that one has ever played.   While this game did feature a sweet online multiplayer mode the offline battle options were enough to keep players busy until Mortal Kombat X was released in about four years later in the Spring of 2015.  Not only is the replay value of Mortal Kombat 9 high but its a game that hardcore fans of the series would definitely hold on to since its one of the best fighting titles of the early 10’s.
